International Mobility Program: Canada-Peru Free Trade Agreement

The Canada-Peru Free Trade Agreement (CPFTA) was signed in 2008, and since then, it has allowed for free trade between the two countries. The CPFTA has provided new opportunities for Canadian companies to enter the Peruvian market and vice versa, leading to increased economic activity and job creation.

As part of the CPFTA, the International Mobility Program (IMP) has been created to facilitate the movement of people between Canada and Peru for business purposes. The IMP allows for temporary entry of business persons, who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents, but are engaged in business activities covered by the CPFTA.

The IMP for the Canada-Peru Free Trade Agreement allows for three types of temporary entry, including business visitors, intra-company transferees, and professionals. According to the CPFTA, business visitors include those who may enter Canada or Peru for business meetings or trade shows, purchase goods and services, undertake research or training, or participate in conventions or conferences. Intra-company transferees are employees of a company who have been employed for at least one year and are being transferred to a branch, subsidiary, or affiliate in either Canada or Peru. Professionals are individuals who are qualified under the CPFTA to work in specific fields such as engineering, architecture, law, and accounting.

The IMP under the CPFTA has proven to be beneficial for companies and individuals alike. It provides opportunities for Canadian companies to establish and expand their businesses in Peru and vice versa. It also allows for the transfer of knowledge and expertise between individuals and companies, aiding in the growth of both economies.

In addition to the economic benefits, the IMP also serves to strengthen relations between Canada and Peru. By encouraging collaboration and communication between individuals and companies from both countries, the IMP fosters a sense of partnership and understanding.

Overall, the International Mobility Program under the Canada-Peru Free Trade Agreement has been a success. By facilitating the temporary entry of business persons between Canada and Peru, the IMP has led to increased economic activity and job creation, as well as strengthened relations between the two countries. As such, it serves as a valuable model for other free trade agreements with a focus on international mobility.
